Director of Assessments
DIRECTOR OF ASSESSMENTS – FULL TIME
The Town of Belchertown is accepting applications for a Director of Assessments. This full-time position is responsible for implementing municipal assessing procedures in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws and Department of Revenue regulations. The Director performs appraisal and classification of real and personal property, manages the Assessing Department’s operations, and serves as staff support to the Board of Assessors while working collaboratively with the Town Manager and other municipal departments.
Major duties include:
Performing the assessing function for all taxable and exempt properties in town, including residential, commercial, industrial, and personal property; assisting in annual valuation adjustments and five-year revaluations as required by the Division of Local Services; maintaining the Computer Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) system; coordinating with other departments in preparation of tax bills; providing financial data and “new growth” estimates for budget and tax rate setting; overseeing field inspections and cyclical property inspections; compiling valuation reports for submission to DLS; supporting tax classification and recapitulation processes; serving as custodian of departmental public records; assisting the Board of Assessors with abatements, exemptions, and valuation appeals; supervising Assessing Department staff; and attending evening meetings as required.

Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, or a related field; three (3) years of experience in assessing, municipal finance, or real estate; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Massachusetts Accredited Assessor (MAA) designation required or ability to obtain within three (3) years. Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License required.

The hiring range for this position is $82,318 – $105,084.
